Flash Player is no longer necessary for most modern browsers, but it was once a critical addon that permitted you to access certain animations and videos online.  
Flash Player used to support data formats including AMF, SWF, XML, and JSON. However, many multimedia formats like .MPS, FLV, JPEG, GIF, PNG, and RTMP are now handled natively by browsers.  
Some features such as accelerated graphics and webcam support are now deprecated.
